Getting Ready To Bring Your Pet Rabbit Home.

By:

Rabbits can make enjoyable pets, and, with patience, they can even be trained. However, you should take precautions before allowing a rabbit to roam freely in your home. You should also make sure you have everything you need to make your new pet comfortable in its new home.

Most rabbits spend the majority of their time in a rabbit hutch. These can be placed indoors or outdoors. Most of them are made of outdoor grade plywood and wire, but large cages with flat plastic bottoms and wire tops are also available and may be suitable for some rabbits. You should consider the size of your rabbit when it is fully grown before choosing a rabbit hutch. Some have wire floors and others have smooth floors. Sometimes, wire floors can hurt a rabbits feet. Adding bedding to some or all of the floor can help this, or you can buy a hutch with a smooth floor.

You should also consider the location where you will be placing the rabbit hutch. Make sure you have enough room for the hutch, and you should also choose a location that is out of direct sunlight. Whether indoors or outdoors, rabbits should be protected from extreme temperatures. Outdoor rabbit hutches should have a solid roof to keep rain and snow out. Rabbits are usually not bothered by cold temperatures, but they should be provided with an insulated area to get out of the cold. Some rabbit hutches will have an area on one side that is enclosed. Otherwise, you can buy or make a smaller, wooden hut for you rabbit and place it inside your rabbit hutch. You can line it with bedding, and this will allow your rabbit a comfortable place to sleep, where it will be protected from the elements. If you are placing your rabbit hutch indoors, keep it away from windows and heating or cooling vents. If you have other pets, make sure they cant get too close to the rabbit hutch. Rabbits can endure stress or even die if they have too much contact with potential predators.

Handling a pet rabbit is important, because it allows you to bond with your pet and it makes your rabbit comfortable with human interaction. You should rabbit proof an area of your house if you want to allow your pet to roam around, however. You might fence off a room with a baby gate or boxes, but you should still supervise your rabbit any time it is out of the rabbit hutch, both to protect it from harm and to keep it from chewing through your power cords and carpeting.

Keeping a pet rabbit can be enjoyable and most rabbits need very little veterinary care. In some areas, they may need shots, but in many, they do not. Check with your vet to make sure your rabbit is healthy, and to see if it needs any vaccinations. Be sure to clean your rabbit hutch often, and to give your pet fresh water at least daily. You can also buy rabbit chews and toys to keep your new pet entertained.
