Getting It Right With Bespoke Engagement Rings

Getting It Right With Bespoke Engagement Rings

By:

I have worked in a bespoke jewellery company for a number of years seeing customer going through the commission process, so its not surprising that I thing this is a far better way to celebrate your engagement than simply popping down the high street and buying the first bling mass produced product you spot.

What a lot of people dont know is that a bespoke engagement ring doesnt have to be an expensive option in fact nowadays they are usually about the same price as an off the shelf equivalent. A decent jeweller wont charge you much extra for making something individual for you so why not go for it?!

Perhaps the single most significant reason why people are frightened off the process is not being able to see the finished product before you start. The solution to this is simple get yourself a decent designer. A proper designer will talk to you get to know you as a person what makes you tick, what styles you like and above all what you can afford. He or she will then translate that into a design thats perfect for you.

Id say, beware bog-standard jewellers pretending to be designers! Just because you are good at the craft of making jewellery doesnt mean you are any good at the human process of design as explained above. Certainly stay away from jewellers that say that theyll make you something bespoke but you have to sketch it for them first. thats not your job!

With the advent of CAD its possible to see a 3D render of your ring before you get start this is a good option if your ring is straightforward and certainly can help get a grasp of the final engagement ring if you arent good at imagining it. But be careful again of shop assistants pretending to be designers a couple of clicks of a mouse doesnt make you a designer. Remember a proper designer is someone who understands the aesthetics of design and the practical limitations of engagement ring construction and most likely has some qualifications, such as a degree.

So search online or ask around and find yourself a proper designer if you are thinking about a bespoke engagement ring.

Another issue people often worry about when going the bespoke route is commissioning a ring from scratch, proposing with it and your new fiance not liking it you cant take something thats custom made back.

There are a number of solutions to this why not buy a gemstone first, propose with that and then the first thing you do with your new fiance is design your engagement ring together. By the way a word of caution here..be very careful when buying gemstones unseen online just on its specifications its a bit like choosing a bride from a catalogue not all H SI diamonds are alike just as not all blondes are alike!! best to go somewhere where you can sit down with a proper expert who can show you a selection of diamonds or gemstones and help you choose one that you love.

If youve chosen yourself a good designer he or she could do a set of sketches for you you could propose with those and then take them to the making stage with your new fiance.

The company I work for offers a third option which is a proposal in a box which is a rather nice pack containing an appointment card (for your bespoke engagement ring appointment), information on your designer and goldsmith and other information such as where you might like to stay or celebrate your engagement when you come to our studio.

So dont discard the bespoke route on the grounds of expense or the worry of getting it wrong there are ways around that and it can be a truly wonderful experience designing your own engagement ring if (like everything I suppose) you choose the right people to help you.
