Getting Heard At Local Festivals

By:

Putting together a band that works, scheduling rehearsals, playing shows, all of this is a time consuming project that has to be a labor of love in order to really be worthwhile. In the early years of getting a music group up and running it helps to build up a reputation in the local community. Playing at local festivals and other local events is a great way to start being heard. One should never overlook the many opportunities there are to be heard, from fundraisers to grand openings to weekend tailgate markets. House parties are also a way that many bands get their start. Whatever sort of local concerts are appropriate for your band should be taken advantage of as often as possible in order to start creating a name. Having a name that is recognized can really make a difference, especially once a band moves up to playing bigger venues. "Hey, isn't Band X that group we heard last year at the street festival?" is a much better response than "huh, I've never heard of Band X before." Hopefully, in this example, the listener liked what they heard and so will be more likely either to attend the event or if nothing else do a little sleuthing around online to see if you are, in fact, the very same Band X.

This brings us to the Internet. Everybody's doing it and if you want to be successful at promoting yourself, you need to do it too! You'll need more than a website, too, by the way. In fact, often more important than a stand-alone website, from a marketing perspective, is having profiles on the popular social and music networking sites. Today's fan wants to be able to sample your music online, they may prefer to purchase it online, and they will also be looking to check out video footage of your tour and other such media. It is also the case that the personal touch of social networking has become the norm- people expect to get updates from their favorite bands that way, they expect to know when there are upcoming events on the calender and so on. The big social sites are a necessity, but in order to capture the attention of the music buffs, you'll also want to make sure you have a strong showing on music and local event calenders. The more interactive they are, the easier they will be to work with.
