Getting Approval To Attend A Conference

By:

The money it takes to attend a conference is harder than ever to squeeze out of budgets because of the difficult economic environment all companies find themselves in right now. However, attending an effective seminar by a serious employee may have the capability of improving the bottom line, and thats the best reason of all to attend one.

Who Makes the Decision?

Does the CEO make all the budgetary decisions regarding such things as expenditures on continuing education? If so, an appeal to him or her will be different from an appeal to your department head, so the first thing to keep in mind when you are crafting your appeal is who the audience for it is.

Write Your Case

Does the seminar you wish to attend deal with matters that will impact your company? For example, if customer relations are poor and your sales are sagging because of it, a seminar on customer relations for anyone who is managing the sales force would be a good choice.

Will the seminar benefit more employees than only the one who will be attending? The cost benefit of information that can be brought home and disseminated to other employees such as those who interact with customers will certainly strengthen your case.

Can you attend the seminar online, thereby reducing the cost? The company wont have to pay for a hotel, transportation, and meals if you attend online. You may need to invest in a computer camera and microphone for an online seminar, but those are minor investments. This will strengthen your case, especially if you are going to share the information you get from the seminar with other employees.

Are you a good candidate for this expenditure? Do you keep your head down and work hard at your job? If so, by all means cite the work you do and your reputation as a serious and dedicated worker. You might even get another employee who also has a reputation of being serious and hard-working to support your request.

Also, explain to your department how a particular seminar will be of benefit to the department as well as the company and ask them to endorse your request.

Its good to write your case down. It will be good preparation for you and will help you make a stronger appeal. Also, if necessary, you can leave it with the CEO or department head who will make the decision.

Making the Appeal

Dress the part. Dont overdress but avoid wearing anything that is distracting or that would suggest that you are not a serious employee.

Tailor your presentation along rhetorical lines with an introduction, a thesis statement (what youre asking for), and logical reasons for its approval. End with a conclusion that ties it all together and again mentions what youre asking for.

If your appeal is rejected, accept it without emotion. You may have an opportunity to try again later, so you dont want to burn any bridges.
