Get Your Car Geared Up For The Colder Months

Winter is coming around fast and the cold weather will soon be upon us, with people dusting off their coats, boots, hats and scarves in preparation for the first blast of snow or ice that will inevitably hit the country at some point over the next few months.

However while people are busy putting on their winter clothing, switching the heating on, and starting to gear up for Christmas, it's surprising how little attention is given to people's cars as the temperatures drop.

Just like people, cars don't particularly like the cold and have to be protected against it if they are to function properly. For example, you must check that there's the right level of antifreeze in your engine coolant to avoid ending up with a frozen engine block and burst radiator - a costly mistake to make.

Even if you're not mechanically-minded there are a few simple steps you can take to help prepare your car for the cold - after all, it is going to be exposed to the elements for a good few months until spring comes around again.

Here are three relative low-maintenance yet important car parts that you should give a bit of TLC to in the lead up to the winter months:

Bulbs - The darker nights are closing in, making it more important than ever that cars are visible and can see other road users effectively. A new bulb costs only a couple of pounds - check that all of yours are in good working order and replace them if not.

Blades - Bad weather and darker nights can make seeing out of your windscreen difficult as it is, but a poor set of wiper blades certainly won't help. If you're left with marks on your windscreen, or the wipers just aren't clearing it, then it's time for a new pair.

Batteries - Your battery takes a lot of abuse over the winter as heaters, wipers and lights are more heavily used. Buying a battery charger and using it regularly can make your battery last longer and will help to prevent it going flat.


If you're really not comfortable dealing with these maintenance issues yourself, your mechanic can check them for you. However garage prices can be expensive - it may be better to go to a good car parts retailer, as many offer free car checks and can fit parts for an affordable price.
