Get Rid Of Loose Skin Hanging From The Arms - Scar Less Way

By:

It's been called "grandma arms". It's been called "batwing syndrome". It has even been referred to as a "loose hammock" of skin. What are those folds of skin hanging from the arm area?

Sometimes after a large amount of weight has been lost the skin has been stretched too much to allow it to bounce back to fit a smaller arm circumference. Other times this condition is merely a result of aging or gravity.

The surgical procedure which is performed by a plastic surgeon in order to alleviate this excess is called an arm lift or a brachioplasty. An incision is made from the elbow area to the armpit area (the armpit region is also referred to as the axilla). The extra folds and fatty tissue are snipped away and the opening is sutured closed.

To minimize scarring, the incision may be placed within the armpit area, if it is possible where it will be virtually hidden from view. This is referred to as the short scar arm lift. This short scar will start out red but it will lighten and fade away as it heals, in order for it to be even less noticeable.

The short scar method is not always possible, however, and will depend on the individual case. The amount of skin, muscle, and tissue that the physician has to work with will determine whether this method is an option. The other technique that reaches the length of the upper arm is called the full scar arm lift.

Brachioplasty is usually done under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The patient will be back to work within a couple of weeks, but lifting must be curtailed even longer. It may take six months to a year to see what the scarring results will truly be and even then will fading will still occur over time.

If there is quite a bit of excess fatty tissue in addition to the unsightly skin folds, an additional procedure called liposuction may also be performed in order to give the arms a sleeker look. Liposuction is a procedure where a slender tube called a cannula is inserted into the fatty deposits in order to liquefy the fat and make it easier to be suctioned out with a vacuum device.

The incision that the physician makes in order to use this tool would also most like be placed in the armpit area in order to hide scars.

When all is healed, the patient will be free of the embarrassing droopiness of batwing syndrome and finally be able to wear sleeveless and short sleeve garments with pride.
