Get Ready For Your Close-up

By:

Headshots are an essential ingredient in resumes and websites across many fields. Fortunately, they are a lot more fun to compile than the business portion of the resume and/or cover letter--but they do require some preparation. Headshots are all about projecting the right image, so get ready for your close-up in the days before your photo shoot.

Whether you are male or female, please, for heaven's sake, make an appointment for some basic waxing services. In the past, I have strongly recommended that everyone have their eyebrows waxed in order to give a cleaner overall look to the face, but all the ladies may want to have their upper lips and chins waxed because even subtle facial hairs can be detected in the finished product.

A skilled photographer will most likely do some "touch ups" to make such obvious imperfections fade away, but it is better to make sure they aren't there in the first place. Boys, if you have stray beard hairs that encroach on your cheeks or near your eyes (like my spouse does), have them removed, too. It's normal to be a little fuzzy and can even appear glamorous, but stubble that has gotten too messy is off-putting.

Make your complexion glow! Again, whether you are a man or woman, you need to make an appointment at a day spa for an exfoliating facial about five days before your shoot. Fortunately, many estheticians have the means to address a variety of skin concerns so they can soothe and treat to give you the best skin possible for the big day of your shoot.

Your hair is just as important as your complexion. Make sure that it looks healthy; a trim might be a good idea, particularly if you use heat styling and/or color often. A deep conditioning treatment and a touch-up of your color might be wise in order to make sure that your hair appears vibrant.

Planning a style is vital, as it can make or break your whole look. Too many women are so focused on getting the right look that they use far too much product, making them appear over-processed and fake. So opt for a look that is on the softer side.

Big curls are popular right now, so consider a perm to mimic the body, volume, and curl that is so admired. If that isn't your style, however, that's all right--just choose something that flatters your facial shape.

The photographer you choose should, naturally, be experienced and acclaimed, so s/he should be able to provide you with tips specific to whatever image you are trying to project in your field. Don't be afraid to ask them lots of questions!
