By: Mike Matthews

Are you looking to increase your speed, strength and endurance in the sport of martial arts? If so, then you need to understand nutrition basics. Don't let the style of the sport deceive you, martial arts is just as demanding on the body as weightlifting or being a dancer.

Depending on the style you're studying, your goal may be to lose or gain weight. Regardless of your purpose, proper nutrition can help you achieve the powerful muscles and strength needed for the sport.

Just like a car, your body needs the right nutrition to keep it from running out of gas; therefore, it is best to avoid fad diets and gimmicks. Drinking adequate amounts of water will help keep your body hydrated and replenish the water lost through sweat.

In addition, nutritional supplements designed for athletes assists in getting the right balance and variety of minerals and vitamins for increasing energy, and helping repair body tissue.

The basics of any diet plan should be choosing the right fats, carbohydrates and proteins. As an athlete, you will burn far more calories than a sedentary person will and the empty carbohydrates found in rice and pastas won't give you the fuel you need to perform your best. Complex carbohydrates such as those found in wholegrain bread, oats, bean and nuts are best for providing long lasting energy and aiding in stamina.

In martial arts athlete nutrition proteins are essential for building muscle tissue, shedding weight and helping you get and stay full between meals. Lean proteins are low in fat and ideal for everyday consumption. Seafood, white meat poultry, eggs and soy are good sources. Meal replacement bars, shakes and energy bars offer high amounts of protein, choose those that are low in fat and sugar for best results.

Fats often get a bad reputation, but for optimal fitness and nutrition fats are essential. The key to choosing fats for your diet is to use them in moderation and trying to avoid sources of saturated or trans fat. Look for mono-saturated and polyunsaturated fats as well as foods high in omega-3 fatty acids.

The cornerstone of any martial arts diet plan involves setting reasonable fitness goals. With an understanding of the nutrition basics for martial arts you can increase your current fitness level and get the toned, strong body you want to take you to the top of the sport.
