A slow cooker is one of those kitchen gadgets that often seems like a good idea that we never get around to acting on. Many people lead such busy lives that they can easily find themselves living off ready meals, or a limited list of staples which they know they can prepare in a short time.

Often, they don't realise what a wealth of healthy and imaginative meals they are missing out on by not looking at the possibilities afforded by a slow cooker.

Recent years have seen a big revival in the art of slow cooking - that is, preparing meals without using any of the short cuts which modern technology has availed us of, and instead preparing food with no regard to how quickly it can be presented to us.

The great beauty of cooking many foods in this way is that they retain all their nutrients. This might seem an obvious benefit, but in reality, how many people give it a thought when they are deciding what to serve up to the family?

Much has been written in recent years about the advantages of steaming vegetables, rather than boiling them. Cooking them in this way helps them retain their moisture and texture very few people appreciate overcooked vegetables, and ruining them by leaving them in the pan too long can also take away a large proportion of their nutritional value.

But a steamer is a sophisticated way of preparing vegetables that ensures that they keep their taste, and they are presented in the best possible way an important factor when a family has fussy kids who won't touch their greens unless they are perfectly cooked, and look good on their plate.

A slow cooker makes a real difference to the results which can be achieved when cooking a quality joint of meat. Who doesn't love the taste of meat which is so tender that it just falls off the bone? As people are paying more attention to the quality of the meat they are buying, greater emphasis is also being placed on the optimum way of preparing it, especially when a premium price has been paid for that quality.

Slow cooking is a phenomenon which might sound anathema to busy parents with a family to feed. But it's really a proven way of serving food just how it should be and no one in the family should object to that.
