Get More Out Of Your Ira

By:

Thinking of how to put the money in your IRA to work? Having trouble picking what goes into a taxable account or your IRA? It might seem like a good idea to use the funds from your individual retirement account for investments that give much in the way of taxable gains. However, the definition of "gain" isn't quite as simple when you think about taxes.

From a basic point of view, cash can be equated to taxable gains. Preferred stocks and corporate bonds, which pay out semi-annually or monthly, are viable investments for your retirement account. You should also consider REITs or Real Estate Investment Trusts, ETNs or Exchange-Traded Notes, and BDCs or Business Development Companies - because any distributions from these tools are taxed as ordinary income compared to being levied at qualified dividend rates, they will serve you better in your IRA.

If you trade stocks frequently, or invest in actively-managed mutual funds with high turnover rates, you can place them in an IRA if they result in capital gains that are taxable. In comparison, low-performing investments in equity are recommended for taxable accounts as they can be written off as taxable losses here. You can't be entirely sure if a stock will turn out to be a loser or a winner; in this case, it's sensible to hedge your bets (and risk) and place stocks you want to trade in either type of account.

What else can you place in a taxable account? You can narrow down your options by selecting investments that won't significantly benefit from tax breaks, such as those that generate returns that aren't subject to tax. Municipal bonds are one example of these tax-exempt investments.
