Get Credit Report - How To Get A Copy Of Your Credit Report

By:

Before extending credit to you, creditors check your credit report. It provides lenders with information they need to evaluate your creditworthiness. That's why it's a good idea to get credit report and see what's on it.

Your report will give you a complete picture of your current credit situation and will allow you to check for inaccuracies. It contains your past history of borrowing money, your bill payment history, and your employment history. Your report may also note other matters of public record, such as judgements or bankruptcies.

There are three major credit bureaus in the United States from which you can obtain a copy your report: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. These agencies collect and maintain information on consumers. They receive your personal information through the same lenders who grant you credit. These lenders report your payment history to the bureaus. The bureaus sell this information to lenders or any financial institutions from which you have requested credit. The information is sold in the form of reports.

The law says that you have the right to know what is in your file. You should want to know what information is being distributed about you by these bureaus.

If you're requesting your report because of a recent denial for credit (within the past 60 days) and one of the reasons for the denial was due to information in your report, you have the right to obtain your report at no charge. However, if you simply wish to check your record, the bureau will charge a fee for giving you the report. Also, you have the right to obtain one free copy of your report each year if you request it.

To obtain your report, simply contact the bureau that keeps your report and request it. Your request should include all identifying information, such as:

Your full name and address
Your Social Security Number
Your Date of birth

Remember that your report shows how you have paid your past obligations. It provides potential credit grantors with the information they need to evaluate your creditworthiness.

So you know by now that good record is a valuable asset. With good credit, you can get approval for a loan, credit card, buy the car or house you want and stop paying high fees and interest rates. Having good credit makes it easier for you to enjoy a better life.

Many reports have errors. And most of those errors hurt your rating, rather than help it. And you have the right to challenge anything you feel is wrong. It's a simple process.

Mistakes on your report can affect your chances of obtaining credit in the future. Your credit rating can also have a huge impact on your chances of getting a job in certain fields. You're probably aware that your credit rating can also be a deciding factor on whether or not you get approved for an apartment.

Checking your credit report is one way to decide what needs improvement. Therefore, it's wise to check your own report periodically, to make sure all information is current and accurate.
