Get An Organized Closet In 4 Simple Steps

Get An Organized Closet In 4 Simple Steps

By:

HINT: This process can be used to organize just about any area of your home.

1. Purge It is very important to get rid of all of the things that you do not need or use before you purchase organization supplies or closet systems.

To make purging simple put aside 4 bags or bins.

Bag 1 for items to be thrown away (items with stains or holes)
Bag 2 for items that can be donated
Bag 3 for items that you would like to take to a consignment store
Bag 4 for items that you are undecided about whether to keep or not.

If there are items that you decide to repair or clean so that they will get used, do so immediately, or set aside a specific time in the near future to do so.

Place bag #4 in a specific storage area (an attic or basement). Label it with a date one year from the day you place it in storage (example Get rid of by ___.) If at some point you decide that you need an item out of that bag, you can easily go remove the item at that time. All items that remain in the bag after one year can be sold or donated. If you havent needed the items in that one year time frame you probably never will.

2. Sort & Design - First put all items that are similar together. Put all of your sweaters, pants, button-ups, purses, belts, and so on in separate piles.

After seeing everything, you will have a good idea what you have so you can get the correct closet system to accommodate your items. Getting a built-in system that makes the most of your space and makes all of your items visible and easily accessible is my recommendation. The Container Store has a product called Elfa that is a great line of closet systems. They are both adjustable and durable. Ikea and California Closets are also good options.

3. Get Matching Hangers - This makes a HUGE difference. I like the velvety hangers because they save space (very slim design), your garments "stick" to them so your clothes actually stay on the hanger, and they prevent "shoulder bumps with their special design. Lightweight knit shirts and sweaters can even be safely hung on them.

4. Keep it Organized Have a designated bag, box, or bin in your closet for items to be donated or sold. For every new item that is brought in, one item must go out. Donate or sell the items when the bag is full. Your closet will remain in perfect order (and you will never need to organize your closet again!).

Make it Easy
To start, you may want to organize just one closet every week or even every month. Once you have organized all of the closets in your home, it will be much easier to keep your house clean and you can significantly shorten the amount of time you need to get ready because you will be able to find what you want within seconds.
