By:

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one of the members of the anxiety disorders' family. The distinguishing feature of this disorder is that expression of anxiety is less focused in it. A person may experience anxiety for many things and events throughout the day. This anxiety or worry is uncontrollable for the person and causes impairment in his daily functioning. The worried person focuses on his anxiety and ignores other disputes of life that deteriorate his daily functioning. This excessive worry may cause feelings of fatigue, lack of concentration, irritation, sleep disturbances and muscular tension in the sufferer. The worst part of the story is that such persons become habitual of remaining in aroused physiological conditions. When they don't find any reason in the environment to feel anxious, they think about past, extract anxiety provoking thoughts, and become anxious to maintain their aroused condition.
This is the disorder which is more prevalent in females as compared to males. This can be developed during childhood and adolescents. Common view says that females are sensitive naturally, and take more stress on trivial things as compared to females so, they are at risk for developing Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Anxiety disorders are internalizing disorders in which a person is affected at personal level. Females are mostly affected by these disorders. In contrast, there are externalizing disorders (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Conduct Disorder) in which sufferer acts out in the environment and, people in surrounding are affected by sufferer's disorder. During puberty period, females develop problems like stress, anxiety, and depression which affect them internally.
There is a strong need to psycho educate people for clearing misconception about the disorder. Psychoeducation is a basic therapeutic entity in which clinicians give awareness regarding psychological issues. The motivation behind psychoeducation is that people will try to find solutions for their psychic problems when they will know and accept that they are suffering from any psychological problem. Mostly in under developed countries, where women face different stresses in routine, people consider their disorders as lame excuses to avoid house chores. So, there is the need to develop the understanding that their exhausted behaviors have psychological basis. There is also need to reduce children's exposure to stressful conditions during their childhood. Moreover, try to consult a psychologist as soon as you notice any change in the child's behavior. If management is not attained at early periods of the disorder, then disorder may hold roots in one's personality and, lead to anxious personality disorder. Children may not develop anxiety if they receive proper information regarding pubertal changes. Sometimes, children have biological predispositions for developing anxiety. In this case, healthy environment can reduce risk.
Pharmacological interventions include antidepressants and antianxiety. Through relaxation techniques, a person can overcome his anxiety. Mostly, psychologists train patients for deep breathing exercises. Moreover, they also provide training for relaxation of body parts. It is important to provide the good model to children at early ages. Children learn coping strategies from their parents. So, if parents are capable of managing anxiety in an effective way, then children will also learn healthy coping strategies.
Generalized anxiety disorder is the one among internalizing disorders, which is most often diagnosed as compared to other anxiety disorders (e.g., Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Social Phobia etc). Adopting healthy life styles, sharing burdens, counseling at personal levels are the things that can help in managing the disorder
