In a general surgery position, the surgeon cares for all types of patients. Many are referred from the patient's internal medicine specialist or family physician. These patients have many different symptoms and conditions. At times the symptoms will be evaluated and the conclusion will be the need for a specific type of surgical procedure. Examples are gall bladder stones causing severe pain will require a cholecysectomy or removal of the gall bladder.

At other times the diagnosis will be less clear and more testing or even exploratory surgery will be required just to determine a diagnosis. In these cases the physician in the general surgery position may be working with other specialist to determine the diagnosis and the best course of treatment for the patient.

Many large hospitals employ physicians in a general surgery position to care for patients admitted through the emergency room with conditions requiring surgical treatment. Acute appendicitis is one of the more common admissions requiring a surgeon. There are also trauma patients from motor vehicle collisions and other types of trauma requiring the services of a general surgeon.

Another type of general surgery position is one with a large multispecialty group of physicians. In this type of practice, physicians from many specialties in medicine practice together. The physician in the general surgery position would see any patients within the group diagnosed with a possible surgically treatable condition.

In a general surgery position patients are usually seen for a short period of time until the surgical problem is resolved. Most general surgeons do not have an ongoing relationship with their patients. Patients will, if they have had a good experience with a particular general surgeon, ask to be referred back again and again.

Most general surgery positions require long hours of work. Work also comes at odd hours of the day or night. Many surgical emergencies seem to present late in the evening hours. For this reason someone in a general surgery position must enjoy not only working at night but also must be flexible about the hours they can work.

A person in a general surgery position must also work well with people. The people who work in the operating room with the surgeon are a team. While the general surgeon is often directing the team, the other team members have knowledge of specific areas of care. The surgeon must trust them to perform their jobs well.

For a physician, a general surgery position offers a wide variety of work sets. Rarely is there time to be bored. With long and late hours, a general surgery position is an exciting way to earn a living.
