Professional whitening treatments use gels or pastes with high concentrations of peroxide, the chemical component that opens the pores of the enamel and lightens the dentin. The whitening effects are immediate, and they can last for up to one year with good dental hygiene.

Professional teeth whitening begins with removal of plaque buildups along the gum line and filling of cavities, if there are any. After a protective barrier is placed on the gums, a peroxide gel or paste is then applied to the teeth for 15 to 20 minutes. A special light is incorporated into the process to stimulate a bleaching reaction. The gel is rinsed off and reapplied several times for one hour, at the most. Your dentist may recommend you to follow this up with an at-home whitener for a specific period of time.

Professional teeth whitening is a safe procedure. But because higher concentrations of peroxide are likely to cause damage to the surrounding gums and lips, side effects may include increased tooth sensitivity and soft tissue irritation. If you have sensitive teeth, its best to consult your dentist for options that may alleviate the sensitivity during the procedure.

Anyone who wants to achieve a healthier smile can receive this procedure. However, cavities and gum disease should be treated before teeth whitening is initiated. Keep in mind that teeth whitening does not lighten existing restorations, such as fillings, crowns, and veneers.
