General Anxiety Disorder

A generalized anxiety disorder can be described as unnecessary concern about daily things, a feeling that leaves you with alot of tension and continues for more than 6 months. This tension and anxiety will interfere with your way of life such that they are not able to function properly. You spend most of the time worrying; you feel impending doom and are exceedingly uneasy about things that would not usually worry you. If nothing is done about your situation, general anxiety disorders can turn into panic attacks.

Here is how this happens. Panic attacks can generally take place because of a sense of increased worry and worry in someone. The more you worry, the more your body percieves that your in great danger, and so starts preparing itself for defence. This defence mechanism is called fight or flight; the body is getting ready to run to safety or to stay and fight and defend itself. It will start to supply the muscles with added energy, the heart will pump a little faster ensure that more blood is moving amongst the muscles, and your muscles will feel a little tight in readiness to fight or run.

Eventually, a tipping point is reached. All this stored energy has to be released. The "enemy" is all the fear and the anxiety that is bottled up inside the body. Without warning, the body will suddenly react as if it's in tremendous danger. All the reactions that you would expect in such a situation will manifest; the heart beats much faster, the muscles will shake, and the chest will tighten. There is a strong sense of impending doom This panic will usually only last for a minute or two and then you start to feel it leaving you, and it may take a few minutes or a day to feel normal again.

Because you are in a state of constant worry, you now have another thing to worry about: what if I have another panic attack? You will fixate and worry over this to the point where the body starts to prepare all over again to either fight or flee. Then another panic attack occurs, at this stage you will be worried something is very wrong with you....

Now you can see how general anxiety can cause you to have panic attacks and then you worry about having another panic attach which causes you more anxiety that can lead to another panic attack,it becomes a vicious circle that can take over your life if left untreated..

There are two things that you need to look at. One is the anxiety disorder. What is causing you to worry continuously? In a lot of cases, it's merely the life we are living. We are caught up in things we do that make us unhappy; we are all too keen to please and so small failures seem much worse than they acually are; we never take a break to refresh and restore ourselves.

The other thing is the panic attacks. For some people panick attacks can happen without a reason. It's understandable that someone should worry about what could be causing them, but try not to get so anxious that you end up having another panic attack.

In both cases, you can be helped. Generalized anxiety disorders and panic attacks are today recognized as a medical condition and you can get treated either through therapy or medications, or a combination of both.

Don't ever ignore these feelings. If you experience yourself worrying greatly, you need to stop and find out what it is. In most of the cases, they are things that you can let go of with little consequence. Sometimes you may find that you want to justify your reasons for being anxious and worried. Ask yourself if whatever is causing you generalized anxiety and panic attacks; is it really worth my health?
