A gearbox is an enclosed system of assembled gears. It can also change the direction, speed, or torque of mechanical energy. Usually, a gearbox transmits mechanical energy from a prime mover to an output device. In other words, a gearbox is a unit which receives the input speed (driving speed) source and it changes it to a different output speed source that is driven speed by using a series of industrial gears. The main purpose of a gear drive is to transmit uniform motion between two shafts. This should be done at a constant ratio. Gearboxes are applied in a large number of industries like aerospace, agriculture, paper, mining and pulp industry.

In India, a wide variety of gearbox manufacturers are using the superior most quality of materials. The gearboxes are normally prepared by keeping into mind their different performance specifications which may vary from one industry to another. Some of them differ in a range of capacities or sizes, while others in terms of their speed ratios.

Gearbox is also known as speed reducer, gear head or gear reducer. There are several types of gearboxes which can be easily made available such as bevel, spur, spiral, helical, planetary, sequential, cycloidal, offset, crane duty, worm reduction, right angle bevel, shaft mounted and worm. The gearboxes are used to reduce the input speed of the electric motor to produce a lower output speed from the gearbox.

Planetary gearbox is used in most of the industries because of their torque capacity and efficiency. This gearbox comprises of three components- sun gear, planet gears and ring gears. Planetary gearbox offers lot many advantages vis--vis other types of gearbox. These gearboxes are have higher torque to weight ratio, low backlash, less weight, high cyclic carrying capacity, greater resistance to shock and improved lubrication. This is a special type of gearbox which is commonly used in large number of industries such as power industry, wind turbines, sugar industry, material handling equipment, medical equipment, robotics machinery, automotive industry, aviation equipment and packaging equipment.

Some of the engineering companies also manufacture roller press gearbox, vertical rolling mill gearbox and rotary head gearbox. These gearboxes are designed in a very user friendly manner with adequate applications to serve the industry requirements. Rotary head gearbox is usually utilised in down the hole (DTH) drilling Rigs. Hydrolic motor driven gearbox provides rotation, called a rotary head that moves up and down with the help of a feed system. It generates the pull down required to provide sufficient weight on the bit.

Gearboxes are usually kept inside the casings. It helps the gearboxes in a number of ways. Casings provide protection to and also ensure smooth functioning of the gearbox India. It gives structural support for the shaft bearings that in turn helps in gear holding. Apart from that, it reduces noise intensity and the amount of the heat that is produced due to the internal friction. It prevents the lubricant from spreading and increases the visual qualities of gearbox.
