Gas Grills Vs. Wood-burning Grills

By:

Nothing is more delicious than a homemade hamburger or a juicy stake grilled to perfection on an outdoor grill. But not every grill is created equally. Gas powered grills are the grills most commonly used by households across the United States. This type of grill typically runs on natural gas or propane. However, a good wood-burning grill can provide some of the tastiest meat available. If you are in the market for a grill, here is a list of some of the qualities of gas grills and wood burning grills.

Gas Grill
Although there are several different types of fuel used in gas grills, they are most often just referred to generally as "gas" grills. However, propane, natural gas, or butane may be used as a fuel source. Most grills are manufactured to heat using a specific type of fuel so make sure you know which kind you've got. It will probably take some modifying to make a natural gas grill run on propane. Many people like to have a natural gas source installed on the outside of the home so that they can plug the hose from the gas grill directly into the home's natural gas source.

If your house is already set up for natural gas use, this shouldn't be too difficult to have installed. Gas grills come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Pick a size based on the price and the size of company you generally expect. Also, the best materials are usually either stainless steel gas grills or cast aluminum. Both of these materials are great for outdoor use because they are resistant to corrosion and deterioration. A grill with at least two separate burners is best.

Wood Burning Grill
Although many people refer to grilling as barbecuing, an actual barbecue involves smoke and heat to cook meat over long periods of time. Grilling meat is better for smaller portions of meat like hamburgers or steaks while barbecuing is best for large portions of meat like roasts or brisket. For people who want the authentic taste of real barbecue, a wood-burning grill is the best option. Like a gas powered grill, wood grills come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

A backyard grill may be purchased at your average department store while more professional wood grills may be harder to find. A larger professional wood grill utilizes a pulley system to raise and lower an adjustable grilling surface while a regular sized grill would have a grill surface that can only be raised or lowered all at once. The heat source is easier to control with a larger grill. Whatever option you choose, you are sure to delight your friends with delicious food cooked right on your own outdoor grill.
