Garden Zip Wires - Safe Fun At Home

By:

Ever wished you could fly? Now you can, simply by locating two sturdy trees or posts with a clear flying path between them and fixing a zip wire between them. Hold on tight and prepare yourself for a thrill!

When choosing the anchor trees check they are strong and mature with no signs of disease or rot, they should also be at least 15mm in diameter.

These 'flying foxes', as they are known in America, are an exciting and unusual outdoor toy that promises to provide hours of entertainment. Best of all, it does not require a slope or a huge garden as zip wires can be installed between to trees of equal height.

A garden zip line is a great way to build strength as you take on the challenge of trying to hold on until the end. If you have a swimming pool or pond which is deep enough then you might want to consider installing your zip wire over it so that you can jump (or fall) in to this at the end. Leaving slack in the middle of the line means that you can fly to one end and then slowly glide back to the middle.

If there is no slack in the line the ride will be faster, this is not recommended if young children will be using the line. If there is no slack it is advisable to have someone and the end in case you need help stopping.

Many aerial runways are designed to be strong enough to take the weight of both children and adults - generally a 3mm cable will hold up to 16 stone - so there really is no excuse not to get everyone in the family involved! They are safe for anyone aged 3+ years, although this may vary depending on the type and adult supervision is advised.

Are They Safe?

The advice here is to use your zip wire in groups and, depending on your age and the height of the line, wear a helmet and gloves. It is not a good idea to place a zip wire over a hard surface or stones.

Please do, however ensure the zip wire is installed properly according to the manufacturer's instructions. Only buy a second-hand zip wire if you are absolutely sure it is in good condition.

You can buy a new, good quality zip wire for under 90 with all the fittings and full installation instructions should be provided. If you follow the instructions with care, you'll be zipping along in no time! You should also check the cable and handle bars to ensure they have not become frayed or damaged before each use.
