Garden Lawn Care

By:

It is quite unusual for a garden in the UK not to have some kind of lawned area. After all lawns have played a core role in British garden design for hundreds of years now and form the centre peice around which the remainder of the garden is laid out. Perhaps it's our mild yet damp weather, which makes lawns easy to look after or the typical ways in which we use our gardens which mean the typical green lawn is almost an essential element. Homes of every size all over the country usually feature at least one lawn and even brand new homes typically come with a seeded or turfed area already laid out. Housing developers know that all homes look more attractive and sell more easily when surrounded by a good looking lawn.

While many gardeners wish to own a well-kept, weed-free lawn that looks fantastic, the thought of all the work that might involve can be slightly daunting. Well the good news is that lawn care is now a relatively simple operation. Gardeners just need to stick to a short list of tried and tested lawn care jobs and using some of today's very efficient lawn treatments, a beautiful green lawn is within the reach of even the most inexperienced and time-restricted gardeners.

In the past creating a healthy and good looking lawn might have involved many hours of strenuous physical effort. Sweeping, raking, scarifying, mowing, forking, rolling the list of jobs that involved long stints of hard effort seemed to go on and on. It was almost enough to frighten off even the most determined gardener. Luckily these days things are different thanks to affordable garden machinery and modern lawn care products.

A vibrant, strong growing lawn will need mowing every week during most of the summer so a good electric or petrol-driven lawnmower will quickly repay the outlay as one of the essential lawn care tools. Low cost electric scarifiers are also available now so another of the most back-breaking jobs of the past is now less strenuous. Other electric tools are also available to speed up and make more enjoyable other lawn maintenance jobs like edging.

Modern advances have also been made in the development of grass seeds. Commercially produced seed now comes in numerous versions, all aimed at specific applications. Some varieties are designed to be low maintenance, more weed resistant and slower growing to reduce mowing, while others are developed to be more resiliant to heavy use for sports fields and domestic lawns. There are special seed mixes for bowling greens, football pitches and other sports. Some seeds are now sold pre-coated with a nutrient layer that will assist the seed in becoming established when it is first sowed.

By selecting the most suitable seed variety, sowing the lawn correctly and at the right time to allow a healthy root system to develop and then making sure any developing problems are quickly taken care of, a great looking lawn can be well within the reach of anyone.

Lawns don't require dedicated attention all year round, in fact most of the effort is focussed into two distinct periods In spring the lawn will benefit from some extra attention to prepare itself for the growing summer months ahead, while in autumn some additional maintenance jobs will help set the lawn up for a problem-free dormant period between October and March. Beyond that, lawn care is quite simple. Besides the occasional application of a lawn feed product and a well chosen weed control treatment, there is not much to worry about other than mowing the lawn as it grows.

So by making sure these simple lawn care jobs are done in a timely manner, that beautiful lush green lawn can be ready for your and your friends to enjoy.
