Garden Flowers And Floral Designs

Tubs Are Tops

Use tubs and troughs to clothe your patio and bring height and interest to a paved area. Large ones containing trees or large shrubs can remain in position as permanent features, while others can be moved around and replanted regularly for seasonal interest.

Most tubs and troughs hold a greater depth and volume of soil than window boxes and baskets, so larger plants can be grown ... and there is scope for imaginative plant combinations. Always use a good potting soil, and for plants that are to remain in the container for more than a season choose a soil-based mixture. This will have a greater natural reserve of nutrients than a soil-less mixture, and weight is not a consideration if the containers are standing on a paved area.

How To Plant Up A Tub

For a spectacular display, choose a large ornamental pot and cram it with bright summer flowers. Here's how easy it is.

1. Only use containers with drainage holes, but cover these with pieces of broken pot, large pieces of chipped bark, or even broken polystyrene tiles, to prevent the soil washing through.

2. Use a good potting soil - this is essential for success. Ordinary garden soil is likely to disappoint. Add a slow- release fertilizer and water-absorbing granules if you sometimes leave your plants for a day.

3 .Fill almost to the rim, but leave 2.5cm (1 in) to allow space for watering. Place the central plant first, preferably something large, bushy and imposing, such as a fuchsia or an argyranthemum.

4. Plant densely around the edge. Include a few trailers such as the grey- leaved Helichrysum petiolare or colorful cascading pelargoniums. Plant the root- balls at an angle to encourage early trailing.

5. Top up with more potting soil if necessary, firming the root-balls well. Water thoroughly. Keep in a shaded and sheltered position for a few days, if possible, before placing in full sun.

6.Within weeks your tub will begin to look mature as the plants start to grow into each other and gaps are filled in. To keep it looking good, water daily, liquid feed as soon as necessary, and deadhead the plants.
