Garden Climbers - Pruning

By:

Against the walls or fence of a building or a house we very often see wall shrubs as well as prune grown as they help in clothing the entire area quickly. Climbers do not take up much of ground space, but they cover huge areas of the fence or the wall. Regular pruning needs to be done once they have covered the entire area. Climbers need to climb on a particular framework so make sure that proper framework is arranged so that the climbers can climb on. Once they have the proper support to climb on climbers climb on as well as around the support thus covering the entire fence or wall. To train the growth of wall shrubs you can make use of proper support wires.

Prune straggly twigs whenever necessary:

While planting climbers make sure you plant them at least a foot away from the bottom of the wall. To reduce fungal infections and ensure proper airflow around the delicate stems of climbers ensure that proper spacing is kept. In this way the roots of climbers can get a proper hold on the soil. Pruning the straggly twigs with a pair of sharp secateurs is essential on a regular basis. Different shrubs require pruning in different seasons.

Pruning of Clematis, Vitcella, and Jackmanii differs as per the group they belong. Usually it is in early August that you can start pruning. During the colder season it is necessary to cut the prunes closer to the base, and at other times they can be pruned to within at least five to six buds near the base. Some climbers like the Montana and the Alpine form a network of branches and if they are pruned at regular intervals a proper framework of branches can be maintained.

Different climbers in different seasons:

It is best to prune the climbers at the side shoots and cut them towards the base so that blooms are available from these areas. There are some climbers like Patens and Florida which produces blooms from the previous years shoots which were pruned. It is necessary to create a proper framework of branches. Once the climbers bloom it is essential to cut off flowers above the buds. By doing this a lot of the climber's energy is stored for its proper growth. They also flower well during the next flower season. Depending on the type of climbers you can prune them severely or gently. Some need to be pruned during its early days. New foliage can be encouraged by shortening thin stems without buds in the early stage.
