1. The content that you intend to submit must be your own work. If you want to submit articles with public rights rewrite them in your own style.
2. Your articles must be of 350 words at least. Some directories may demand 500-600 words.
3. Most directories disallow links in the article body and provide you with a recourse box for links. More over affiliate links and links pointing to adult sites are also not allowed.
4. Your articles must have updated facts and figures in them so don't forget to do some research before writing an article.
5. Check your articles for spelling and grammatical mistakes.
6. Always write something unique and interesting

Common mistakes made by authors
Here are some mistakes that don't let many authors reap the full advantages of article marketing:
1. Never use a keyword more than 3-4 times in a 350 words article. Doing so will tell the search engines that your articles are no good.
2. While writing an article keep your readers in mind. Writing mere sales pitch or writing just for link building can be harmful.
