Greek cookery is not only about satisfying one's stomach. But most importantly, it aims to please the palate of people from all walks of life. The cuisine offers morsels that are both flavorful and nutritious. Usual food preparations normally make use of fresh vegetables and meats, such as, chicken, lamb and pork. This is why, in general, the Greeks are said to live longer than other nationalities because of their healthy gastronomic practices. Within the Greek culture, the Easter holiday begins on the first day of Lent which is when the Greek community prepares for the resurrection of Christ by cleaning their bodies. When commemorating Lent, there are restrictions as regards to diet. Foods that are allowed to be consumed at this time are those labeled as 'nistisma' which indicate that the food does not contain prohibited ingredients. Traditional foods eaten during this religious holiday are Tsoureki, traditional Easter bread which possess a slightly sweet taste and Greek Easter cookies which are made to share with loved ones and visitors within the home. Easter Sunday is often commemorated with the preparation of a beautifully seasoned lamb organ soup called Mayeritsa. Greek people also love their desserts and sweets; hence, during special events, various types of Greek cookies are prepared. An example is the Melomakarona, which is a kind of cookie with a honey and walnut topping.

Greek foods generally consist of well-loved elements that have been essential components of ancient recipes, yet these also furnish Greek cuisine with its deliciously distinct flavors. A familiar element in many Greek recipes is the paper-thin filo dough, which is often used in baking. The filo dough is quite useful as it can be used in main courses, appetizers or side dishes. The Spanakopita or spinach pie and the known Greek sweet, Baklava, all make use of filo dough. Greeks also love pita bread, mainly because of its versatility. It is also a common element in Greek sandwiches. Greeks love the multipurpose use of the pita bread. It can be eaten as part of a main course or as a snack, or it can be enjoyed dipped in a yogurt and cucumber dressing or a lemon and olive oil mix. One other well-known Greek dish is the Souvlaki, which is like a kebab. Here, one can use diverse meat types, like: pork, chicken, beef or fish. Vegetables can also be used and cooked with the meat on skewers. Main dishes in Greece often make use of a chosen meat cooked with fresh seasonal vegetables. One example is the Moussaka which is prepared with an array of vegetables - eggplants, peppers, tomatoes, onion - plus a type of meat. If you are a vegetarian, you can enjoy the dish by simply forgoing the meat. Greek meals are often accompanied by refreshing vegetable dishes or salads, but preparations vary according to the availability of fresh vegetables. During summer, for instance, favorite Greek fares come with scrumptious fresh salads, like the well-liked Greek salad. One will find generous amounts of succulent olives, tomatoes and creamy feta cheese in most Greek salads. Olive oil and other seasonings are used as dressing. For garnish, nuts are well-liked in Greece.

Greek foods are distinct because of its wonderful flavors and aroma, and most especially its benefits to health and wellbeing. Greek cookery is not only about mastering Mediterranean-style food preparation. It is also about history and culture. When blending basic ingredients and boosting flavors with hints of spices and herbs, let us all remember that what we know about these ingredients are born from ancient recipes that have been interpreted and repeatedly celebrated throughout time.
