Funny Cosmetics

The cosmetics market can often, it is fair to say, be slightly arrogant and full of itself. In a way it's understandable. It is a serious business, with laboratories beavering away on new products which might end up hitting the shelves for several hundreds of pounds a jar. But it is refreshing to witness a company that clearly takes its products seriously whilst having a little fun when it comes to marketing its products. Users of their products will already know which company being referred to the unique Anatomicals. From the way it names its range to the fantastic Cannibals movie on its website, the company has clearly decided to take a new, unique and possibly risky approach to reaching its customers, but one that seems to be working.

Name another brand that would see it fit to call a new eye cream "I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Eye Cream"? Or another line, this time a foot cream, "Cheese Release Me"? They are not above border line puns, either, their "" and "I've Had The Thyme Of My Life" being prime examples. It is this humourous approach that makes Anatomicals products popular among gift buyers, and since they are weel priced for everyday users, it's easy to imagine a happy little collection of products being wrapped up for someone's christmas hamper. Given that, it would be a brave person who bought their work colleague the "Never Lose Your Cherry" lip balm, "Snog me Senseless" breath freshener or any other product aimed at fixing personal problems for example. Some things are best left to other people to buy.

It is not hard to see why the humorous approach would not work for all cosmetics companies. Except that the last thing we need is a jokes competition while we're trying to choose our face creams, witty one-liners don't wash with people who are taking their skin care seriously. The companies themselves try very hard to promote an image of themselves as hard-working scientists, working day and night to come up with revolutionary formulations that can solve previously unsolvable problems. This attention to detail and trustworthy image is essential too if they are to charge the premium prices that they do for their products. Ask yourself seriously, would you pay 200 for a face mask called "Puffy The Eye Bag Slayer"?

Sure, the comic angle isn't everyone's cup of tea, but there will always be those who don't understand the lighter side of life, and for those people there are plenty of very sensibly name products to choose from that are safe, dull, boring yet still do the job.

So it goes to show that if a brand like Anatomicals can stir things up with a little original thinking, then so can others, we should be grateful that the original and best are around to entertain us while offering high quality cosmetics that are perfect for the handbag or the travel luggage, as well as Santa's festive selection.
