Fundraising Quiz Night Ideas

Quiz nights are a great way to raise money. Everyone gets to have an enjoyable night out and community based around your cause is united.

As a quiz night organizer you might be feeling some pressure falling on your shoulders. Arranging a quiz night is no small undertaking after all.

Well rest assured that with a little planning your night can be great fun for the participants and smooth sailing for you as the organizer.

The first thing to realize is that you will probably need some help. A quiz night requires an MC to read out the questions and announcements, one or more scorers to mark the answer sheets and someone to collect entrance fees from the teams as the settle in their seats.

It's true that for a small quiz night you may be able to be a jack of all trades but it makes everything much easier if you have some help.

The core of a quiz night is the questions that are being asked. By making your questions relevant to the participants you help make the night more fun.

Relevant questions can be questions about the community involved or questions that are very topical, about recent events and news.

You can even throw in a few questions about the news of the day, events that were mentioned on the news in the hours before the quiz night. You could for example ask questions about a sporting event that is occurring on the night of the quiz itself.

Multiple choice questions are a great way to go because it's easier for people to mull the question over and attempt to work out the answer than it would be with a simple question and answer type question.

Having some table games available on each team's table also helps. The attraction of table games is that they allow team members not actively engaged in writing down team answers or debating a question to occupy themselves.

There will usually be a person on each team who is not interested in any given question round. A table game gives them something to do.

Don't be afraid to think outside the box and throw in some novelty games. Something as simple as a paper airplane throwing competition will get people off their bums and moving around.

You could for example allow one person per team to pay a small entrance fee to enter the paper airplane competition. They would then proceed to a starting line and see how far they can throw their creation.

The person whose plane flew the farthest would receive a small prize.

Usually there is at least one challenge at a quiz night. Someone will claim that the official answer to a question is incorrect, that they know better and deserve points for an answer that was marked incorrect.

It's usual practice to let people know at the beginning of the night that the scorers decision is final.

There is a better way however. You can allow people to challenge an answer for a small donation fee. Once the donation fee is paid the challengers argument is put to the room.

All the teams will then vote by raising their hands to indicate if they support the challenge. If the challenge is successful the challenger receives their question points, if it's not successful they must return to their chair in disgrace.

If your quiz night is raising funds for a good cause you may be able to get some assistance from local radio and television stations. Community outreach is often part of their marketing activities and they may be able to provide an MC to read the questions out or at least provide some prizes.

When you are constructing your quiz night don't forget to cater to the different types of personality that will attend. Some people have a scientific bent, some like art and literature.

Some people love nostalgia and others are into the latest music. Of you have a different round dedicated to each of these interest areas your likely to have a round that engages most participants.

Audio and video questions are good fun and peak people's interest but they require additional organization and are prone to technical malfunction. If this is the first quiz night you have run do not be ashamed to leave these more complicated question types out.
