Earning a college degree has become a necessity for students who wish to follow successful career paths in practicing most desired professions. Unfortunately, both public and private colleges require significant expenses that seem unattainable for those with financial constraints. As such, aspiring students must have sufficient knowledge on how a college education may be partially or entirely funded by any number of obtainable financial aid options.

Financial aid is usually provided based on a student's need for it. Need-based scholarships are granted to those that are unable to pursue a college education due to monetary limitations. Students may start by applying for assistance from the Federal Student Aid office of the US Department of Education which is tasked to guarantee "that all eligible individuals can benefit from federally funded or federally guaranteed financial assistance for education beyond high school." It is this same office that oversees the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Since need-based grants may not cover all expenses for a college education, other options must also be explored. For example, a student's exemplary academic performance may earn him or her a merit scholarship. This type of financial aid may mean waived tuition fees as well as allowances for books and living expenses. Merit-based scholarships may also be given in recognition of exceptional athletic ability or artistic proficiency.

Students that don't qualify for scholarships may apply for inclusion in a work-study program which allows employment within the campus while studying. Although the pay may not be as much as potential earnings from off-campus jobs, a student in a work-study program will be allowed to render work hours around the class schedule and the requirements will be like that of a part-time job. This kind of arrangement lets a student maintain focus on studies while paying his or her way through college.

For some that plan on attending the same college as their parents, it may help to check on the availability of alumni scholarships. These are aimed at allowing children of a college's alumni to pursue degrees in the same institution, provided that all other admission requirements are met.

Acquiring student loans is another alternative. Students seeking aid via the FAFSA may also be eligible for other student loan programs such as Pell Grants, Perkins, and Stafford loans. However, in going by the way of student loans, consultations on loan repayment and other related matters should be made to avoid incurring too much debt in the long run.

Attaining a college degree may be expensive but is not necessarily out of anyone's reach. With much diligence, a student should research on the different types of financial aid that a prospective college offers by either checking available information online or getting in touch with the financial aid office. Also, consider scholarships offered by various businesses and foundations. Corporations provide for scholarships as their way of promoting college education and enticing exemplary students with career opportunities in different fields.

As for wanting to graduate from private colleges, there is no need to shy away from prominent universities on account of expensive fees in enrolling. In fact, the top ten most funded colleges are also among those that offer the most financial assistance to their students. Harvard, for example, waives tuition fees for students with declared family incomes of less than USD 60,000 a year. Private colleges that offer larger amounts of financial aid may end up to be more affordable than attending a public college that provide much less in grants.
