Fun Free Activities In Newry

At this time of the year, with the summer holidays approaching their end, thoughts turn to school uniforms, shoes, books and stationary.

There is however some time left to have a bit of fun and there is no need to spend a fortune or travel far to do so. Newry has plenty of free fun-filled activities right on our doorstep.

If you visit the tourist office situated in Bagenals Castle, Castle Street, Newry you can get information on all Tourist Attractions in Newry, some of which you may never have experienced, or indeed even heard of.

Many of us visit the city centre on a regular basis, be it for grocery shopping or a trip to the bank. However when was the last time you actually stopped and looked around at the beautiful buildings with their own unique features and history.

At the tourist office you can obtain a copy of the Newry Trail which details many local places of interest and the history behind them. Why not spend a day exploring our fascinating city following the trial, whilst taking the opportunity to relax and visit the many Newry Restaurants and cafes along the way for some refreshments.

If the kids are getting bored of the same routine day after day why not fill up the picnic basket and dust the bicycles off. The towpath which runs from WIN Industrial Estate right up to Portadown is the perfect place for a family cycle, away from the hustle and bustle of the city and indeed the traffic.

You can go as far as you want along the towpath, stopping off to enjoy your picnic, however make sure you bring extra bread to feed the local ducks. A great fun family day out can be had at no cost whatsoever.

If you wish to go a bit further, why not travel to Warrenpoint Park where the children can enjoy the excellent facilities whilst you enjoy a rest in the beautiful gardens. A walk along the shore is also enjoyable and a rewarding ice cream at the end is always a pleasure. Kilbroney Forest Park in Rostrevor also offers plenty of free activities.

Why not take a football and have a kick around in the extensive beautiful open grounds, followed by a play in the well equipped park. If perhaps you are feeling more adventurous, a walk to the Cloughmore Stone or "The Big Stone" as it is locally referred to will also pass a few hours, followed by a picnic in the designated picnic area. A walk through the beautiful fairy glen is also an ideal way to pass the time and the children will love the experience.

It goes without saying that the mountains surrounding Newry are some of the most beautiful and scenic in the world and there are many designated walking trails through them which you can follow. You must however bear in mind safety issues and follow all safety directions and signage.

Spending a family day out does not have to mean spending lots of money and the above outlines just some of the many free activities which Newry has to offer.
