Fun And Useful Horse Riding Games

By:

Riding horses is not only about sports and techniques; safety and form are also important, but most people want to have some fun as well. This is why there are many horse riding games, which can help riders have a good time, while practicing their riding abilities.

Horse riding games allow people to increase their understanding of cues to the horses and enhance their ability to guide the horse more effectively. At the same time both the rider and the horse can have a really good time. Some of the following games are actually performed even during riding courses, allowing the instructor to enrich the rider's techniques.

Club riding games are quite popular, attracting several riders of all ages. There are obstacle jumping games, even relay games, which seem to combine elements from both the actual disciplines and recreational activities. These games are quite useful for the rider and the instructor, because they can show the level of bonding between the horse and the rider. Riders can also check the responsive rate of their horses to simple commands such as turn, bend or stop.

The horse baton for instance, is some kind of relay, played with horses. The riders form small teams and ride across the arena for a pre designated distance and pass the baton to the one riding ahead of them. The team that will finish faster, without dropping the baton will win the game. The purpose here is to promote coordination between the rider and the horse and enhance punctuality and control over the horse.

The famous traffic or green, red light game - that many of us used to play as kids - has become a rather popular and common horse riding game as well. The horse is supposed to holt on green, stop on red and walk on yellow. The game can be played using colored cones or stripes.

Ride a buck is also a very fun game; all participants place a dollar bill between their knee and the horse and they should make the horse trot. The goal here is to keep the dollar bill as much as possible in its place, so the last one with the bill between his knee and horse wins. The instructor should teach the riders to keep their knees snug to the body of the horse; this is something that can prove very useful to the riders, increasing their balance.

Egg and spoon is also a very popular game; it is usually played with eggs, although many people prefer golf balls too. The riders should form two teams which stand at the two sides of the arena. Each rider should hold a spoon and place an egg (or ball) and move across the arena; he can choose the speed, but he should not drop the egg. The team with the least broken eggs (or dropped balls) wins the game.

Obviously, balance is essential part of the game; those who can ride keeping an egg intact are much better riders and can feel safer on the horse.
