The best time to go to Gili Islands is from May to August.
On can reach Gili Isalnds easily by air and boats. Selaparang Airport (AMI) of Mataram on the mainland Lombok is the nearest airport. But there is a fairly reasonable option to come at Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) at Denpasar, Bali and then take a ferry service to reach the Gili Islands. You will find flights to Bali from places like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Johor Bahru, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Hong Kong, and Taipei.

However, be careful to the strong currents which can be fatal in any time. And if you are an avid fan of scuba diving, Gili Trawangan will be your destination, as the place has the most number of dive operators. But while searching for diving operators, look for those who have PADI license.

All dive shops accept US dollar and rupiah cash as well as credit cards, except when the telephone lines are down (in this case, pay using Internet banking).
Snorkeling:
There are plenty of dive shops that arrange snorkeling or diving for the tourists at the spots of their choice. You can also hire masks and fins off the beach. A snorkeling tour can be of 6 hours duration, starting from 10 o'clock in the morning and may continue till 4 o'clock in the evening. While going for snorkeling, aware of the currents as these can be quite dangerous even close to the shore. Cost: Rp. 60,000 to 150,000 depending upon the shop. You may also need to have some good negotiation skill. The rate is including charges for fins, masks, and snorkel. Cost of lunch is excluded in this.
