From A Catalogue To An Ad Posting Service

By:

Buying and selling has certainly changed over the years. It wasn't too long ago that buying from home meant sifting through catalogues and selecting the right Christmas gift to order for little Lucy. That changed with the advent of television infomercials, followed by entire channels focused on selling a product immediately to an audience. While these methods still exist today, they have been overwhelmingly overshadowed by the mother of all shopping opportunities: the internet.

The information superhighway is amazing at delivering everything we need to know when we need to know it, but that function battles for supremacy alongside the ability to order everything we need to have when we need to have it. Sure, we're not quite at the stage where pizzas are zapped to your iPizza machine, but with one day shipping we're almost there.

Selling has also changed. With websites like eBay and Craigslist and a whole host of others including local newspaper websites featuring online classified ads, there is no need to advertise in the traditional manner; no need to zip down to the local grocery store and hang your ad on the bulletin board, though some still do.

One thing that has changed is the ability to sell things to a much wider audience. Let's say you run a business making dolls out of spaghetti. Certainly there are a few people in your neighborhood and city that are interested Rigatoni Rita, but there are certainly not enough for you to make it a viable business plan. Add a marketing campaign that spans across globe via the internet and you might make a fortune if your trend catches on.

However there are drawbacks to the web. For one thing you have to be technically savvy enough to be able to take advantage of it all. Sure, companies like eBay make it as easy as they can, but if you are a 73 year old grandmother from Chippewa who has never turned on a monitor you may not feel competent enough to put your homemade fudge on the web, no matter how good it tastes.

These days, however, even that particular dilemma is solved through other online businesses. Some businesses have brick and mortar stores where you can bring your treasures to be sold on the internet. The store takes your stuff and posts it on eBay, waits for a buyer, and then ships it off for you, keeping a portion of the sales price as their cut of the profit. If you're a business wanting to promote your products or service, you can find an online ad posting service to post ads for you wherever you want. This convenience effectively runs the marketing side of your business for you in exchange for a small fee.

There are always experts to help you buy and sell these days. And while things going viral used to be a bad thing, these days it just might make you a bucket load of cash.
