Fresh Produce Is A Joy

By:

Summer is a time for hot days, warm nights, outdoor events, children playing, gardens growing, fresh produce, fresh tomatoes, swimming, hiking and relaxing a little from the craziness. Fresh produce in the summer, fresh produce in the winter, how does that work?

Article Body: Winter is work time, movie time, heavier food time. For some reason we don't seem to have as much energy in the winter as we do in the summer, maybe it is shorter days, less activity, cold nights, too much heavy food. Even when we do exercise it is often in the gyms, we need that fresh sunshine and air to invigorate our bodies. Spring and Summer tend to be times of enthusiastic outdoor living, lighter foods with barbeques, salads and sandwiches.

Spring and summer is active time with swimming, hiking, yard work, a perfect time to plant and grow a garden and eat fresh from the back yard. Summer evenings on the patio watching the children play in the sprinklers, climbing the trees and skateboarding are priceless. The days are hot, the evenings hopefully cooler, water and kids just go together; kids and summer evening just go together.

Have you ever stopped to consider where all our produce come from in the dead of winter? Arizona has almost a year round growing season but what about the rest of the country? The produce is shipped in from South America, and other warm weather climates. It is shipped from Arizona to the rest of the country also. It is stored in giant refrigerated warehouses by produce distributors. Tomato suppliers from warmer weather climates ship in their wares. It is stunning to realize that we can live in Minnesota and eat fresh mangos, bananas, lettuce, apples, pears almost year around. What an amazing time we live in. Fresh food is available to all of us living in the states regardless of weather.

Less than a hundred years ago you only ate what you canned during those hot summer months, nothing in winter was ever fresh with the exception of a turnip or winter squash if you lived in the north. It would have been tough going months on end with nothing more than heavy meats and breads. Fresh produce is what bring revitalization to our bodies and minds. Thank goodness for the tomato suppliers, banana suppliers and apple suppliers that somehow manage to keep the stores stocked with fresh produce year round.

Summers are great, tomatoes ripping in the yard, winters are colder and an even more important time to stay active and eat fresh so year round we can feel great. Stay active, stay healthy and have fun.
