Frequently Asked Questions About Acne In Females

By:

1. What is acne?
Acne is a skin disorder that causes outbreaks of skin lesions known as pimples. It is caused by oil glands in the skin (called sebaceous glands) exuding too much sebum. In the right amounts, sebum acts as a natural moisturiser, but in excess, it causes skin pores to become blocked. Although it is not a serious threat to the health, acne in females can cause scarring, disfiguration and embarrassment.
Acne is the most common skin disorder, and pimples most often form on the face, back, chest, neck, and shoulders.

2. What are the different types of acne lesions?
- Comedo (whiteheads or blackheads) or papules: The comedo is the basic type of acne lesion. That is, a blocked pore. If the pore remains under the skin, it forms a white bump or a whitehead. If the pore pushes through the surface of the skin and oxidises, it appears as a black spot, known as a blackhead.
- Pastules or pimples: pastules or pimples are red at the base, and contain pus.
- Nodules: Nodules are more serious lesions. They are painful and can cause scarring as they are lodged deeper into the skin.
- Cysts: As with nodules, these are painful and can cause scarring. They are also filled with pus.

3. What triggers acne in women?
There are many things that can trigger acne in women:
- Hormonal changes during puberty. Due to the increased hormonal activity during puberty, acne has become known as a teenaged condition, while this is not true as acne can occur at any age, during puberty, girls bodies produced increased numbers of a male sex hormone called androgen. This causes the sebaceous glands to increase in size and produce more sebum.
- Hormonal changes as an adult. During times of increased hormonal activity, such as menstruation, pregnancy and menopause, acne outbreaks can increase.
- Certain medications such as those used to treat types of depression and epilepsy.
- Makeup
- Friction or pressure on the skin
- Genetics

4. Does poor hygiene cause acne?
No, absolutely not. In fact, over scrubbing the skin can actually worsen any outbreaks of acne. The best way to clean the face is to wash it gently twice a day, using a mild soap.

5. Can stress cause acne?
Stress does not directly cause acne, but the effects of stress can be very bad for your skin

6. Can eating chocolates or greasy foods cause acne?
Scientists have found no link between the diet and acne. However, eating foods rich in vitamins A and B can help promote a clearer skin.

7. Can birth control pills help treat acne?
For women who tend to breakout mostly around their menstrual cycle, yes, some birth control pills can help. These pills can aid in clearing acne by slowing down overactive sebaceous glands.
