Frequently Asked Questions (faq) About Tinnitus And Hearing Loss Answers To Common Questions

By:

Have you ever been to a concert and found your ears rang after it was over? Now imagine what would happen is you frequented concerts or noisy environment for a long period of time. That is, in essence, what tinnitus is. Below are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions concerning this condition.

How many people does tinnitus effect?

It is estimated that more than 50 million Americans experience tinnitus to some degree during their lifetime. Out of those 50 million Americans, approximately 12 million have it severely enough to cause them to seek medical attention. Around 2 million of these patients are so severely affected they cannot function on a normal, day-to-day basis.

What causes tinnitus?

The exact physical cause or causes of tinnitus are current unknown. There are, however, several likely known sources that have been found to trigger or worsen tinnitus. One of those sources is prolonged exposure to loud noise. Prolonged exposure damages and even destroys the hair cells, also called cilia, in the inner ear. Once damaged, these cells cannot be renewed or replaced. The end result is a loss of hearing that cannot be restored or a continuous ringing in the ears. Just think of how your day-to-day activity might be if you constantly heard that ringing in your ears you experienced after attending your last concert. That is why prevention of hearing loss is so critical.

Who is affected by tinnitus, adults or children?

Both children and adults can experience tinnitus although it is more prevalent in adults. Children who do experience it may not complain because they are often times plagued with their hearing loss since birth and may not recognize this bothersome condition for what it is. Instead, it will seem like normality to them. If your child suffers from tinnitus its best to consult an audiologist for advice.
