Freeview Vs. Freesat- Which One Is Best?

The technology behind televisions has improved over the past few years and thanks to the digital switchover many people can receive more channels than ever before. Added to this the quality of televisions has increased considerably and their prices reducing and it is easy to see why so many people enjoy a better viewing experience nowadays. One of the options people have is whether to go for freeview or freesat and both provide great television experience.

Freeview all came about after the ITV Digital meltdown in 2002 and provides the public with free-to-air digital television through the existing television aerials. Fast forward eight years and an estimated 18 million people in the UK have freeview operating on at least one television set in their home which is figures that were released a year ago so these figures are probably higher now. There was a problem with reception at first and although some of these problems have been fixed some areas still receive poor reception.

Freeview has been so popular because it is cheap with boxes being available to buy at just 20 so they are affordable for everyone. They are also easy to install so you do not need a engineer to fix you up as a few simple connections to the aerial and you have a choice of over 90 channels (including radio channels).

Off the back of the success of freeview, BBC and ITV launched a satellite based alternative know as freesat in 2008. While works off an existing aerial and set top box, freesat requires a set top box and a satellite dish. With the number of people who have existing dishes for other digital companies, you could make use of it without having to get a new one installed. Freesat is more expensive than its freeview compatriot as boxes are available from 50 which is still very cheap. If you need to dish though this will set you back around 80 which is where the costs start to mount.

Freesat HD is set to be released on to the market very soon and there will surely be a rush to get it as it will offer a greater watching experience. Both freeview and freesat provide customers with great value for money but it is your personal choice at the end of the day and your budget may do the deciding for you.
