Freestyle rap battle advice is hard to come by. As a ten year veteran battle rapper who wins about eighty percent of my battles, I determined to share some useful tips that have helped me survive the battle rap circuit.

Focus on specifics. Generally, the more definite your punchlines are, the harder they hit. Try and choose things about your opponent that aren't right away obvious. For instance, I once fought a guy with an Oakland A's baseball cap. Rather than talk trash about the A's- which wouldn't be a great idea in Oakland- I began to list off evil words about him that begin with the letter A,eg "arrogant, asinine, and atrocious" not to mention a few others that don't belong in print. This brings me to my next point...

Win the gang. Most freestyle rap battle tournaments are based totally on audience vote. Even those that are decided by judges are still heavily influenced by the group. The lesson from this? You are not there to beat a rapper ; you're there to win the gang. To try this, avoid announcing foolish things directed at the spectators. If I had bagged on the A's the crowd would have turned on me, which is the reason why I kept it specific without losing the group in my freestyle.

Be prepared. Anyone that's battled for a while knows the importance of scoping out the competition. If I am in a room full of MC's, trust me, I watch each battle and try to come up with punchlines about each MC. Clearly, I spend more time focusing on the best ones, as there's a greater chance I'll battle them at some point! Having just one or two mins before going up on stage will help you come up with a few one liners that just may win the rap battlefor you.

Show no mercy... Most of the time. There is a awfully thin line in a freestyle rap battlebetween entertaining and abusive. Often, you may be as evil as you need provided it's amusing. Everyone knows someone who can say anything and get away with it ; try and be that bloke when you're on stage. There are a few times when laying off a topic will score you big points. For instance, MTV hosted a rap battle where one of the MC's was blind. The guy who battled him, Swan, made fun of the guys small status, his spotty garments and puny style. He did not ridicule the kids blindness ( except pronouncing "I'm a take you outside and rob you blind" ). If he had, he'd have lost the crowd in a nanosecond. But he did not and won the battle based primarily on merit. A dope freestyler can rap about anything ; he showed he could steer it away from the most obvious points.
