Freelance Writing For Money - Five Traps To Avoid

Freelance Writing For Money - Five Traps To Avoid

By:

A lot of people say they want to become a writer and in fact earn income doing it. It's doable, but only if you take the time and work at it. Becoming an author is like becoming a musician. Bear in mind the ancient joke about how to get to Carnegie Hall. Practice! And never let anything discourage you. Just like music practice or physical exercise or anything that's worthwhile but hard, it's easy to create excuses not to do it. Here are 5 huge pitfalls to steer clear of:

1) Saying that you are too tired. Everybody is tired. You have a job plus a family and the many other pressures of life to contend with? Who doesn't? People who are keen about what they do are energized by what they really like. They aren't "too tired" to do it. Too tired is an excuse for people who really do not care about it all that much.

2) Waiting for inspiration. If you wait for inspiration, you might be waiting a a really long time. What do professional writers do when they aren't inspired? They write anyway. Just pick a topic and start writing. Even if you can only think of the most ordinary things to write. Get the juices flowing, ideas will come. Activity begets ideas.

3) Blaming agents, editors, readers, critics, etc. for you minimal amount of success. It may seem like life isn't fair and frequently it isn't. Your greatest story or report might be rejected, perhaps more than once. Submit it once again and if it still doesn't sell, create yet another one. Just bear in mind, there's loads of junk being published all of the time and your writing is possibly much better than a lot of it. Grow a thick skin and get writing.

4) Saying you will do it tomorrow. No! No! No! Tomorrow is for losers. Writers write each working day! Make it a habit to fill at least one page or article every day. One page shouldn't take too long and soon the habit of writing will become ingrained. You will do it just simply because it is a habit and at one page per day you could have a 365 page novel polished off in a year. Remember, write each and every day!

5) Thinking you might be much too old or way too young to start. This one is just silly. If you have an notion and the ability to put words on paper or into a laptop or computer, you'll be able to write. Your reader isn't going to care how old you are, he simply wants to be entertained or informed or what ever your particular writing is intended to accomplish. Do not even think about attempting to get away with the too old or too young excuse.

If you want to become a writer, a fiction author, a blogger, an article writer, a copy writer, or whatever, then write. That's what writers do. Please don't make excuses. Write, practice, get much better and fulfill your passion.
