Free Cell Phones Taken To Fire Victims

By:

Free 911 cell phones have been given to residents of a mobile home park that was ravaged by fire this week. After fire swept through a mobile home park in Orange County, California, AT&T landline phone service was unavailable. This posed a serious problem for many elderly residents who needed a way to contact 911. The solution came when the city of Lake Forest gave the residents cell phones from their Cell Phones for Life program. This is a nonprofit organization whose mission, along with the city, is to provide free cell phones and batteries to seniors to call 911.

We have this program available and we want to make sure they get out to the people who need them, Gary Magill, director of community services for the City of Lake Forest, said.

Free Cell Phones Taken to Fire Victims

Emergency service cell phones are becoming more available country-wide. There are many non-profit organizations providing emergency cell phones to the elderly, abuse survivors, etc. Read my blog, Free Cell Phones for 911 Calls. In addition, many charity organizations are organizing programs so you can donate your old cell phone directly to them for their programs. Pace Butler Corporation has a website with direct links to a variety of charities accepting cell phone donations. The charitable organizations listed there are St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital, Rock the Earth, Soldiers Angels, Salvation Army, Leukemia Society, American Cancer Society, Feed the Children, and the Boys and Girls Club. According to the Pace Butler website, Cell phones contain toxic heavy metals and should never be deposited in landfills. By donating your used cell phones you can be sure that these will be disposed of properly while helping fund your preferred non-profit. That old cell phone tucked in your drawer could help save the life of a child or help conserve endangered rain forests.

How should you prepare your old cell phone for donation? The best thing to do is to wipe all the data from your cell phone. Dont give me that look! If you dont have the manual for your old phone, you can go to this website, Erase Cell Phone Data: Free Data Eraser, and they will email the instructions to you within 5 minutes.

How many of us have old cell phones stuck away in a drawer? I have at least 3 that need to be wiped and donated. How about you? Donate your cell phone and let someone else get some good use out of it. Not only are you doing good, you are helping the environment.
