Four Ways To Overcome Being Shy

How to overcome being shy? It's a question and a topic that can really ruin the lives of people struggling with self confidence, who find dealing with social situations hard and who struggle with the human interaction that can help us progress in jobs, relationships and life.

So what do you need to do if you are to discover how to overcome being shy?

1) The most important challenge of all is to understand and confront the root causes of your shyness. This is more than the simple matter of saying "I don't want to go to parties" or something of that ilk. Try and really examine the deep down worries you have about social situations and interacting. Is it to do with your feelings about yourself, rather than the people you meet? If you can work out at your fears, then you have the initial tool to conquer them.

2) Take small steps first. If you find small talk painful, try having exchanges with people in situations that are not 100% social. A good example is chatting with cashiers at grocery or other stores. If things go wrong, you will soon have an excuse to leave when you have paid for your goods. There is less pressure here to "make a friend" than somewhere else.

3) Find people with common interests - on-line chatrooms can work well here. Then you already have a connection with someone if you choose to meet them face to face.

4) Don't rely on alcohol or something similar to overcome your problem. It might give you a short term boost, but the long term damage - mental and physical - is just not worth it. It only hides your symptoms and does not challenge them.
