Four Ways To Fine Tune Your Business During A Recession

By:

Redbox, Starbucks, Apple, Facebook, The Huffington Post, and Wal Mart, what do all of these companies have in common?

Each one is thriving in the midst of recession and despite a national unemployment rate of 8.9% these companies have all managed to not only survive the recession, but expand.

Recession isnt a death sentence to your business; you can survive by following a few simple tips.

1. Stay true to your core: Be honest about what sets you apart from your competition and stick to that. For example, lets say I own an internationally based business and amazing, efficient, and professional communication in Chinese, German, and Thai is what sets me apart from my closest competitors. I wouldnt deviate from my translation agency to a Googles free translation tool just to save a few bucks. I may initially reduce my costs, but when I lose customers due to poor communication, I lose my differentiation, and I lose a lot of money. By cutting costs in other areas and keeping professional translation I help my business retain its identity.

2. Rework your marketing: Focus on which marketing strategies bring you the most business, and consider the most cost effective options. Facebook is set up so that people want to refer their friends to be customers. It doesnt cost Facebook any money, but it sure brings it in.

3. Hire the best people: Its a given, the best employees provide the best customer experience. Foster a company culture of openness, constant improvement and individual accountability instead of closed doors, stagnation and micro-management.

4. Focus on customer service: Happy customers will keep coming back. Apple isnt thriving because its cheap. Apple has die-hard fan base that keeps people coming back because of the great customer experience.

So there you have it, a couple quick metrics to measure your business against. During a time when its tough to know whats going to happen, whatever unfolds, youll be ready.
