Four Tips To Save Money Each Month

By:

The economy seems to be chugging along although most agree it's still not back to its glory years. In times like these most people need to make some adjustments in order to avoid debt and stay afloat. Some have had to look for a second job and others have had to downsize. If you are looking for ideas to live on a tighter budget, consider the following suggestions for saving money each month.

Shop at Sales
It's impossible to completely avoid spending money. When it is necessary, be wise with your money. Look for clearance sales and wholesale closeouts for things like furniture or clothing. You can also consult your local classifieds, Freecycle forum or Craigslist postings for free or discounted items that others are trying to get rid of. Use your creativity and make something new out of someone's cast offs.

Look at all Luxury Expenses
You have probably never considered your cable bill, cell phone or other subscriptions a luxury but when you're trying to cut back expenses this is the best place to start. Think of all the things you pay for and put them in categories. What is necessary to live? What is nice to have but not necessary? Start cutting out the things that are not necessary.

Keep a Detailed Record
It has been said, "If you fail to plan then you plan to fail." Relevant in many situations, but especially with your budget. You must keep a detailed record of all your expenses in order to know where your money is going and how to cut back. It can be as simple as keeping track in a notebook or as complex as using software suck as Quicken, but the important part is to do it. Set aside 2-3 days a month where you will update all records and input new purchases. Track for several months and then analyze where your money is going and how you could cut back where needed.

Plan Meals and Stay out of the Grocery Store
You may never have thought that planning your meals on a weekly or bi-weekly basis could save you money but it does. First of all, when you plan to shop once a week and buy what you'll need for that duration you stay out of the grocery store. If you are running to the grocery store every other day you will end up buying an abundance of unnecessary items and splurging your budget. Stick to a schedule of when you will go to the store and keep a list on your refrigerator of what you plan to cook. By doing this you will avoid running for take-out and you will keep your grocery budget to a minimum.
