Four Signs That Your Air Conditioner Problems Need Professional Repair

By:

Your air conditioner is probably one of the most important devices in your home. And when it starts acting strange, it can be difficult to properly diagnose whats going wrong. Unfortunately, most air conditioner problems don't get noticed right away so repairs can become quite expensive.

Luckily, there is a solution to this.

All you need to do is keep your eyes open for four major signs that will help you determine whether or not your air conditioner problems are an easy DIY fix or whether they need to be inspected by a professional.

1. Your air conditioner is not producing cool air. This usually one of the first and most dependable signs that its not functioning properly. One reason for this may be that dirt and dust have clogged the filter. Once you clean the filter, if its still not cooling the way it should, youll want to call in a professional.

2. Your air conditioner wont turn on. When this happens, test it first by setting the thermostat to a temperature well below the room temperature in your home. If the unit doesnt kick on, check the circuit breaker to be sure it didnt trip off accidentally. Also check the condenser and the power switch on the unit. If none of these appear to have caused the problem, its time to have a heating & cooling company check the system.

3. Your air conditioner makes a bunch of racket when it runs. While its completely normal for the A/C to produce a certain amount of noise while running, hearing a squealing sound coming out of the device isnt normal. Numerous older air conditioner models have motors that are driven by belts. Those belts can, of course, come loose and slip or even break if theyve been in use a long time. However, if you have a newer model that annoying squealing is probably a sign that one or more bearings are broken and will need to be taken care of by a professional technician.

4. Your air conditioner unit is sitting in a pool of water. Some condensation is normal with air conditioners. However, if you have pool of water collecting at the base of the unit, then the tube has more than likely dislodged or possibly broken.

When dealing with air conditioner problems, even though they're sometimes easy to troubleshoot and fix yourself, I recommend calling professionals if you notice any of these symptoms. Letting professionals handle them will not only save you a lot of time and tattered nerves, it can also save you a lot of money in the long run.

Most heating and cooling contractors provide an emergency service to handle air conditioner problems like these, so even if you discover one after hours you can still get the help you need.
