Four Reasons Your Home Improvement Project Could Go Wrong

By:

One of the most popular expenses to save up for is a home remodelling project. Many homeowners decide to invest time and money into some form of renovation for their house each year, but with so many home improvement horror stories emerging on blogs it can be hard to take the plunge. Many of these horror stories which emerge are a result of lack of planning, knowledge and budgeting. If you're debating whether to rip out that old 70's kitchen and replace it with a new, modern design then consider the points below when planning your project.

Cost and Budgeting

Expenditure is the most important factor to take into account when renovating the home. Budget restricts every aspect of your project from determining how much work you can have done on the room of your choice to the materials which can be used. One of the most common mistakes homeowners make when budgeting is that they forget to make room for possible errors which could incur repair costs being thrown into the mix.

If your budget is incredibly tight then consider - is the job a matter of urgency or would you be better off saving more money to input a higher figure into your project? If you have to scrimp on materials and hire the cheapest serviceman then there's a high chance you're end product won't be very satisfying. Think sensibly here - would you rather have the project completed now to a mediocre standard or wait a few months and have the best home in the neighbourhood? If it's a job for vanity purposes it's definitely worth the wait.

Choosing Materials

When it comes to choosing materials, whether it's bathroom tiles or kitchen counters, it can be incredibly hard to decide which one is best for your home. In this situation, the worst thing you can do is give in and choose something you assume will suit your home. This often results in a mismatch of colours and designs which really don't work. Just remember, they won't necessarily look the same in your home as they do in the showroom.

When in home improvement and DIY shops enquire as to whether you can take a sample home. With wallpaper and paints, there's nearly always samples readily available near the actual product so don't be shy to take some for yourself. If it's tiles or carpets, you may have to ask a sales advisor who will usually be more than happy to supply you with a variety of samples.

Once you have the samples in your grasp, place them in different places in the intended room at different times of the day. The samples often look different in the showroom and you may find the lighting or colour scheme in your home really doesn't complement the sample. Until you've found the perfect material, keep collecting samples and trialling them in their intended location.

Dealing with Contractors

The hardest part of your renovation project can often be the part where you let someone else do the work. Dealing with troublesome or pushy contractors can put you in an incredibly difficult situation. If you're not happy with an aspect of their work don't pay until the problem has been rectified as they may lose the incentive to return and finish the work to your desired standard.

If you do have problems with a contractor then speak to them! Many homeowners fall foul to "shutting up and putting up" when it comes to having jobs done on their home. It could be that the contractor thinks you're satisfied with his work - if you voice your concern or opinion you have more chance of achieving your dream home.
