The nurse has to be able to understand what a patient is going through. They must also know what a person is not saying. A good listener understands what the patient is saying and how they feel about it. Many patients are not succinct speakers. A nurse that is a great listener will divine the meaning by listening to that patient and will be able to ascertain more quickly exactly what he or she means, not only by the words they say, but in their body language as well.

Compassion Is A Trait You Are Born With

Compassion is described as a feeling of deep sympathy and even sorrow for a fellow human being who has been stricken by misfortune. It is accompanied by an irresistible desire to alleviate somehow-their suffering by any means possible. It is also the sharing of that suffering through communication and words of hope and encouragement. If this sounds like you, you have the makings of a great nurse.

The Love Of The Human Race

Do you love people? This is not the love you feel towards close family or a romantic involvement but the kind of love that springs from compassion and the firm belief that no one, regardless of his or her race, or social status, has to suffer needlessly when that suffering could be eased by medical treatment, a kind word, or gesture.

Sacrifice Always Pays Dividends

Are you willing to make sacrifices to achieve your goals? If you are the kind of person who is ready to give up their social life and parties, and devote yourself to the study of the human condition, then you are nurse material because that is exactly what it takes in nursing school. If you can keep the alleviation of suffering in the forefront of your mind as you learn the essentials of nursing, you will succeed.
