Texas can be a difficult state to survive in for some flowering animals, but if you choose the right flowering shrubs, particularly those that are native to the state, you wont have trouble adding blooms to your Austin garden. Below is a list of the best Texas native blooms to add to your backyard.

Red Yucca

The rest yucca plant is a spiky shrub which produced bright red blossoms at the edge of those spikes. These are dwarf flowering shrubs which can grow up to three feet tall and are actually hardy blooming plants you can add not only to gardens in Austin but to majority of the drier areas in Texas as well. To take care of the red yucca, you just need to prune it regularly and make sure that it gets enough (but not too much) moisture. It still grows best in well-drained gardens.

Some gardeners may also refer to this plant as the hummingbird yucca. To make sure this plant grows at its best, plant it in the middle of spring once theres no danger of frost anymore. Wear gloves when handling this plant because the yucca is extremely pointy.

Cherry laurel

If you would like to add a flowering tree to your Austin garden, the cherry laurel is the perfect feet. It has evergreen foliage and pinkish-white fuzzy fragrant flowers which bloom late in the winter and early in the spring. Throughout most of the year, the cherry laurel tree looks like a tall evergreen plant with clusters of blue round fruits. Unlike other native Texas flowers, this flowering tree thrives in moist areas. If you have a particularly moist Austin soil (if you live close to the wetlands or a river system), this is a good flowering plant to add to your garden. The Cherry Laurel is also easy to propagate. You can use seeds of cuttings if you want to grow more than one Cherry Laurel plant. You need to hydrate them well, though. It can withstand drought but grows better in moist areas.

Texas Mountain Laurel

The Texas mountain laurel is a tall flowering tree which produces purple blooms. It can grow up to 6 feet tall in five years, and could be propagated by seeds. Even without pruning and too much care, this flowering tree can still look very attractive. It can grow well on either partially-lit gardens or under direct sunlight. The purple bloom of this tree smells like grape bubblegum, for some reason. When its fully grown, the flowering tree can be as high as 20 feet tall.

Central Texas Sage

The Central Texas Sage is a flowering shrub, but it needs sufficient watering for its purple flowers to bloom. Its drought-resistant, though, so you wont have to worry about your sage plant dying out during the hotter seasons. This blooms during the summer months and should be exposed to full sunlight for it to grow well. Proper drainage is also necessary for this shrub to be at its best health.
