Similarities and Differences Between Paintball and Laser Tag

Both laser tag and paintball are games of action, shooting, and strategy. Each of these sports has leagues and pro players. Though similar in basic skills and strategies, there are many differences between the two games. Laser tag is extremely fast-paced and takes place within a very small playing field. Some of the appeal of laser tag is its thematic environment: there are usually futuristic colors and obstacles, strobe lights, and smoke machines. In contrast, paintball usually takes place outdoors in a natural, usually quite large setting. Many people credit paintball with being much more like real war, because actual shots are being fired. In fact, the military even sees the value of paintball as a training and practice forum. Paintball is usually much slower, quieter, and stealthier than laser tag.

The Fears of Paintball

One of the biggest misconceptions about paintball, and perhaps one of the biggest reasons why people do not get into the game, is the fear of welts and bruises that paintballs can incur. Now to be perfectly honest, paintballs can cause bruises. This is most likely to happen if players are shooting at each other at a close range. As long as players are mindful of the right distances at which to take shots, there is little chance that you will be pelted with painful paintball shots. In fact with proper gear, such as eye goggles and protective clothing, the paint splatters will alert you more to a shot than the actual shot will. So if you have put off playing paintball because of the fear of pain, simply dress well for the occasion and go out and enjoy yourself.

Preparing for War or Just Having Fun?

Often, the sport of paintball is criticized as advocating violence. Paintball definitely does resemble warfare in many ways. However what is gained through the paintball teambuilding experience can be extremely valuable for anyone who participates in a paintball game. The benefits of any sport apply to paintball; namely, physical exercise, teamwork, practice, developing strategies, and working towards a goal. The thing to remember about paintball is that it is not about a bunch of teenagers randomly running around and shooting each other. It is about using your own abilities, the abilities of your teammates, and your understanding of your surroundings to achieve success.

Paintball in the Olympics?

Proponents of paintball often offer the suggestion that paintball should become an Olympic sport. Paintball is a very competitive sport that includes both strategy and teamwork. To some paintball athletes, several of the other Olympic sports seem easy in comparison. However, these sports have something that paintball has yet to accomplish, and that is international recognition and governing. In order to be included in the Olympic Games, sports need to have some sort of governing body that is recognized on a worldwide level. A set of rules and regulations that is recognized by all countries that play the sport must also be in place. Though paintball is a rapidly growing sport with an explosive amount of popularity, it is still mostly based in the United States and has not achieved widespread recognition. This must happen before paintball will be considered for participation in the Olympics.
