Four Common Causes Of Road Accidents Involving Large Commercial Trucks

I know of nothing uglier than a road accident involving a big rig. The destruction and loss of life that so often occurs when a driver loses control at the wheel can be devastating. Most drivers know this and take their jobs very seriously, and the role they play is vital to the lifeblood of our nation. If you just started driving truck, you no doubt have been thinking a lot about the responsibility and the risks involved—let's look at some of the common causes of road accidents involving these commercial vehicles.

1. Economic Realities

As I said, trucking plays a crucial role in this country. If it weren't for the fleets of trucks moving goods across the nation, life would be a very different animal in the modern world, and we should all be grateful for the service drivers perform.

But it's these same economic realities of the trucking trade that often lead to the accidents. Drivers have a schedule to keep, and they intend to keep it. Many drivers, in the spirit of a deadline, drive fast and careless. Others don't get near enough sleep and take substances to stay away, some as "harmless" as caffeine and others hard drugs.

2. Poor Training

Poor training is another common cause of trucking accidents, and this is a shame no doubt. While most companies are diligent about the details and make sure every driver is prepared for the responsibilities of the road, others are a little hastier about finding able drivers. Other independent drivers have little training at all.

3. Poor Judgment

Of course, poor judgment can also be a cause of trucking accidents. This obviously covers most of the above, as driving with little sleep, doing drugs, or hitting the road without proper training are obviously all poor choices. But sometimes poor judgment is more split second than that, and this is the case in many accidents that don't involve commercial trucks as well.

A driver might just decide on a whim that he can make a dangerous pass, or he might take a turn going just a little too fast.

These things are human nature, but it's important to control sudden irrational decisions beforehand or they can get ugly real quick.

4. Other Drivers

And of course, truck drivers are by far not the only ones responsible for accidents on the road. There are a lot of other drivers out there in cars and other smaller vehicles who tend to pull a dumb move from time to time, oblivious to our presence. While we can't control what other people do, it's important to be the ultimate defensive driver when behind the wheel of a big rig.

You can't keep all accidents from happening, but by staying aware about what is going on out there that is leading to wrecked trucks on the road, you can minimize risks quite a bit.
