Forward Thinking Can Help You Avoid Penalties On Your Car Tax

By:

Owning your own car can be plagued with a list of extra payments you may not have considered when you bought it, there's insurance cover that is legally required here in the UK as well as Car Tax which will need paying and proving by displaying a tax disc on your car's windscreen. Driving without a valid tax disc used to be a gamble some drivers took but modern technology has made it much easier for the authorities to track you down.

There are now automated systems that contain details of all of the cars registered on the road in the UK. Car tax is paid every six or twelve months, failure to do so raise a warning flag in this system which can automatically send out a reminder letter and then penalties such as a hefty fine. Technological advances have seen cameras, that can detect if you have an out of date or no tax disc, installed on motorways, so there really is no hiding from the law on this issue anymore.

A lot of motorists earn fines because they simply forgot and didn't deviously decide not to pay; this is the reason it pays to be proactive when getting your car tax paid. Sometimes you will receive reminder letters a few weeks or a month before your current tax disc is due to run out, so it's pretty clear when you should start getting ready to apply, they tend to send the form you need as well.

Car tax is now based on the emissions and other aspects to do with your car, larger cars tend to have higher road tax than smaller 'run-abouts' and some of the new hybrid and electric cars do not have to pay any road tax (but still require a valid tax disc). The cost for another year's coverage may well be too steep for some drivers so there is an option to purchase six months cover instead, in most cases this can be half the cost or less than a 12 months payment.

You can complete the form and take it to your local DVLA centre or some branches of the Post Office, some smaller local post offices are unable to handle road tax renewals so make sure you use a large branch with tax payment services. If the DVLA mails reminder documents to you, it will be possible to apply for your tax disc online or over the phone. What you do need to be aware of is that you will have to wait a few days for the tax disc to be delivered. As long as you are registered on the DVLA systems as having applied and paid for your tax over the phone or online, you are able to drive for five days after the end of your current tax period.

In general it is best to renew your tax disc as soon as possible to avoid any complications and with all the different ways you can complete it, there really is no excuse to leave it too late.
