String Floss versus Water Floss Which is Superior?

Recently Waterpik shined up, scaled down and turned green a friendly little water flosser for children. It is cute and you are able to even decorate it yourself. Waterpik is a Fort Collins business and I am a Fort Collins Pediatric Dentist, so I've always had a tender spot for them. But, I also wish to advocate for my patients' households. Is this a great item? To find out I did some analysis.

Waterpik ,the business, boasts of three research studies looking into the effectiveness of water flossers over standard nylon floss. I obtained those studies and looked into them. All three were published in dental journals (but not the very best dental journals), all three had different authors, and all three showed the waterpik to be considerably far more effective than flossing or brushing alone. Two studies even went so far as to say 2X and 3X more effective, which is pretty good for the advertising department. It's generally harder than that to summarize dental study in an advertisement.

What else did the scientific studies say? They stated that brushing and flossing or brushing and waterpiking is usually better than only brushing. We knew that. I think we can all accept that anything is greater than nothing in regards to flossing. The scientific studies also said, no differences had been reported in plaque biofilm among the three groups. And that is certainly the punchline. Waterpiks can't remove the bottom layer of plaque completely from the tooth. Floss can, but only if utilized effectively and consistently.

So the answer? As a Fort Collins Pediatric Dentist, I believe floss is greater at removing plaque in between the teeth. It's the gold standard. However, if flossing for your family members is like brussel sprouts or a automobile accident in fun and frequency, waterpiks are far better than nothing. I caution parents that like all new gizmos, the water flosser may well lose it's luster after a few weeks. It is possible to acquire lots of flossers for exactly the same cost, but you gotta use them. I am reminded of my home fitness center that saved me funds more than acquiring a Health Club membership and I still don't work out! Consistent routines established at a young age as an expectation (not to be continually rewarded) will be the key to dental health above anything else. You choose for your family. Was a study ever completed looking at brushing, waterpiking and flossing? Are you kidding? They've laws against child abuse in this nation!

As always, I desire to help you raise healthy contented young children. For those who have a question about this subject or any other (dental, not fitness) just give me a call or e-mail me at greg@biggrinswithdrgreg.com. Happy Holidays! Your Fort Collins Pediatric Dentist
