Form Follows Function

When companies think about how to reach out to prospective and new consumers, they often times use promotional items. Many people might not know this, but there are many promotional items on the market that can be used to reach out to new prospects. However, common sense dictates that certain promotional merchandise would be better suited for a company to give out, than some others. For example, let's say a new bakery opened up in a neighborhood. To attract customers, the bakery would give out samples, and possibly some promotional merchandise. It wouldn't make very much sense for a bakery to give out computer mousepads, or whistles. It would make sense for the bakery to give out promotional items, such as calendars, cookie cutters, or plastic cups.

So, this is what a company or a business entity has to consider when they are thinking of items that they'd like to give out. While the purpose of giving away these free items is to spread goodwill, and cheer, the larger purpose of giving out these items, is to create memories in the minds of potential and new customers. When a customer looks at a promotional item, they will see the company's emblem on logo on the item. In most cases, they will also see the company's address, telephone number, or email address. In the future, if the potential customer needs to get in contact with the company, they can simply pick up their promotional item, and they will have all that they need to contact that company.

These items are usually brightly colored, or are otherwise easy to find around the house. Business cards on the other hand just aren't as effective. They are small, and they tend to get lost. Even if someone tacks up a business card on a bulletin board, they have strain to read the name of the company, and they need to strain to read what is on the card. Beyond this, the card will warp over time. On the other hand, people look forward to getting their yearly calendar, appointment book or pen from their local insurance office, or their local medical clinic. They appreciate getting promotional items, such as a chew toy, or a ball from the vet's office. These are promotional items that allows the form to serve the function.

At the same time, these items build goodwill, and they are just plain fun. As a matter of fact, it's a little known secret that many people love attending conventions, because they love obtaining the promotional merchandise that is given away at these conventions, and fairs! Yes, while the company is spending money on giving things away for free, they are also planting seeds of thought and consideration into the minds of those who need certain services, and contacts. When a person needs a service provider, who will they call first? They will most certainly call upon the service provider who's business logo is on a promotional item! And if that promotional item is a product that is useful in conjunction with the business entity, then brand recognition will resonate all the more.
